Paul Skenes once had -6000 odds to win the NL Rookie of the Year award but Jackson Merrill has completely disrupted that foregone conclusion.
Skenes started the All-Star Game and is currently the third favorite for the Cy Young award but his Rookie of the Year odds have crashed to -200 at FanDuel. The San Diego Padres’ Merrill is the second favorite with +150 odds.
Merrill leads all NL rookies in hits, homers, slugging percentage and RBI. In fact, his numbers are even higher since the All-Star Break. Plus, Merrill has five game-tying or go-ahead home runs in the eighth inning or later.
Tyler Fitzgerald of the San Francisco Giants is the third favorite at +5500, implying this is likely a two-person race between Skenes and Merrill. Additionally, a pitcher has won this award in each league only once in the last nine seasons.
