Twitter is considered by many to be a platform to voice most opinions no matter how stupid they/you are. It is a manifestation of our country’s greatest liberty and one that many other countries don’t typically value. That is the privilege of freedom of speech. It is quite literally what this country was founded on.
Twitter which has come under fire for banning and shadow banning (another topic for another day) individuals and corporations is doubling down on watchdogging with the ironically named feature, Birdwatch, its crowdsourced fact-checking tool. The program lets people flag misleading tweets. In order to use Birdwatch, users have to agree to three rules: contribute to build understanding, act in good faith and be helpful, even to those who disagree.
One Tweeter summed up his feelings about Twitter’s new toy by saying…
“What right do you have to select what media I can or cannot see to determine which is consumable. & newsworthy, are you implying I cannot determine that for myself?”. Seems like a fair question.
