The 150th Open Championship is underway at the Old Course at St. Andrews, and we have an idea of who will be fighting for the win this weekend. Here is a rundown of the top contenders and whether any bets have good value.
Cameron Smith
Current Score: -13
Odds: +165
The Australian golfer came out hot in the first two rounds, leading by two strokes. He came into the event tied for the 9th best odds. History plays into Smith’s hand, as it is tough to come behind for a win at St. Andrews. A bet might still be worth it at plus odds, even though the payout won’t be as much as it was before the tournament started.
Rory McIlroy
Current Score: -10
Odds: +450
McIlroy came into the event as the favorite, and he still is in contention at three strokes back. If you came into the weekend believing McIlroy would have a good chance to win, this might be a good time to place a bet. Otherwise, it would be advisable to stay away.
Cameron Young
Current Score: -11
Odds: +750
Maybe it’s because Young only shot three under in round two, but I’m confused as to why he has a better score than McIlroy but has worse odds to win. Yes, McIlroy came in as the favorite, but Young just seems like a good value play. Even a small bet has the potential for a good payout.
Stay Away
Dustin Johnson
Current Score: -9
Odds: +900
Many fans who only watch the majors might see this as a good value play because Johnson is well-known, but no one should touch anyone outside of the top three. On top of that, the last six winners of this event were within three strokes after the first round. Johnson is four strokes back with two rounds to play. The odds might be tempting, but that is a lot of ground to make up.
