What Is Micro Betting?

By Ryan Bologna

You’ve probably heard of prop bets and maybe you know what live betting is, but what about micro betting? From the name, it could be almost anything. The best way to describe micro betting is a combination of live betting and prop betting. You might have questions about what types of bets are available for each sport and where you can find them. We’re here to answer them all.

Just in case you are a total novice to sports betting, a prop bet is a wager that is not tied to the final score or outcome of a game. For example, you can bet on how many yards a player or team will get in a single game. Live betting is simply when you place a bet on a game that is already taking place.

Those two bets combined to create a micro bet. There is no need to rush and get your bet in before a game starts, and there is no waiting until the end of a game for a result. In many cases, you will get results for your micro bets almost instantly. A lot of them depend on the game you are betting on, so let’s go into what types of micro bets are available depending on the sport.

Baseball is arguably the most popular sport for live betting. We’ve even covered how streaming services are trying to integrate micro betting into their broadcasts. Here are some of the most popular baseball micro bets:

  • Inning moneyline or total: Instead of betting on the outcome of a full game, you can bet on which team will score more runs in an inning or the total number of runs for an inning.
  • Team to score in an inning: You can bet on whether a team will score in an upcoming inning or not.
  • Result of at-bat: As simple as it sounds, you can bet on what you think will happen in a single at-bat.
  • Result of pitch: This is as rapid as it gets. You have to be quick, but you can bet on the result of every single pitch of a game.

Football is very popular as well when it comes to micro betting. Here are the most popular bets:

  • Next play result: Bet on what will happen on the next snap.
  • Next drive result: Bet on the result of the next drive.
  • Field goal make/miss: Bet on whether a kicker will make or miss a field goal.

As you can see, baseball and football lend themselves to being great for micro betting. These types of bets are available for basketball and hockey, but since those sports are much more free-flowing, so there aren’t as many options available. One of the most popular for basketball is whether the next free throw will be made or missed. For hockey, one of the most popular micro bets is who will score the next goal.

So where can you find these micro bets? They are available in most sportsbooks. Somewhere in your app, you will likely find “in-game” betting. Then you’ll click the sport you want to bet on, and you’ll see all of the individual games to choose from.

Like sports betting in general, it is really important to set limits, especially if you are a beginner. With micro betting, it can be easy to fire off a bunch of bets during one game while losing track of how you have gained or lost. Keep in mind that it is extremely hard to make any type of profit with sports betting.
