This year’s Final Four will be on Saturday, 4/1, and one of the particular interests to me is following the legendary exploits of the Hurley family. If you don’t know who they are, let me give you some quick background, as they are one of the most decorated basketball families in the history of the sport.
Bob Hurley Sr. Coached at Saint Anthony’s in New York City for 45 years, leading them to 26 state championships and is a certified basketball Hall of Famer. Bobby, his oldest son, had a remarkable career at Duke. Starting as a freshman on a loaded team, Hurley would eventually capture two national championships and go to the Final Four three times. An automobile accident in his rookie year derailed Bobby’s NBA career, but he found success as a coach, not surprisingly, and is currently the head coach at Arizona State.
Danny attended Seton Hall where he had a less decorated but solid college-playing career. Post-college, Danny hopped right into coaching and worked his way up the ladder, eventually landing his first job at Wagner College. From there, Danny went to Rhode Island, then UConn, where he has now led them to a Final Four.
Quite a basketball legacy for one family!
