The 2023 NBA Finals is not the dream matchup that anyone envisioned. The small market Denver Nuggets are vying for their first NBA championship while the Miami Heat have had a lot of success in their relatively short existence. Miami versus Denver will likely be the lowest-rated NBA Finals in a long time. On one hand, you have a very small market in Denver. On the other hand, you have a largely apathetic fanbase that is not avid or enthusiastic during the regular season, but I think this will be a really compelling series if you can get beyond that.
It got me thinking — what are the greatest rivalries that you look forward to every year in sports? Here are my top five and let me know yours in the comments.
1. Lakers vs. Celtics
This rivalry has everything you could possibly want. Opposite coastlines — East Coast vs. West Coast. Different weather, different cultures, and different fanbases. A long history of hatred and a potpourri of NBA Hall of Famers, both players and coaches. The Lakers-Celtics matchup checks every box.
2. Yankees vs. Red Sox
Re-read the above paragraph with the exception of being on opposite coasts. This one has it all as well.
3. Duke vs. UNC (Basketball)
These two powerhouse teams play against each other twice a year, at least. The schools have played each other in basketball for over 100 years and the record is remarkably close, including the distance between the two — they are separated by a mere 7 miles. Hall of Fame coaches, All-Americans everywhere, and an intense hatred for one another. It’s must-see TV whenever they play.
4. Ohio State vs. Michigan (Football)
These two schools hate each other with a burning and undying passion, but they share one thing in common — great and historic football programs. Once again, All-American players are all over the field, legendary coaches, and a rivalry and hatred for one another that burns with white-hot intensity for 365 days a year. Again, it’s must-see TV.
5. Auburn vs. Alabama (Football)
There were lots of rivalries to choose from for the fifth spot, but I chose Auburn/Alabama for a variety of reasons. Mainly, I’ve been to the game three times. Secondly, my daughter is going there to play volleyball. So I’m jumping in with both feet. An in-state rivalry that is only comparable in intensity to the legendary Hatfield/McCoy feud. Great players, great coaches, great history, and great barbecue.
