Fading Sharks biting bookies

The San Jose Sharks have been a bettor’s dream for the first month of the NHL season, and bookmakers do not anticipate relief anytime soon.

San Jose can set a record on Tuesday with a 12th straight loss to start a season when it hosts the Philadelphia Flyers as +155 underdogs. Their current record of 0-10-1 is as dismal as it seems. Only once have the Sharks covered the puck line (+1.5) and not only have they been an underdog in every game, but this is the first time their moneyline odds have been less than +200.

Oddsmakers expected a painful season, as the Sharks entered the year with the lowest point total of any team (65.5). Additionally, they were +225 favorites to finish with the worst record and the adjusted price is now -190.

They are the first team since 1966 to allow 10 goals in back-to-back games and have a league-worst goal differential of -43. The next-closest team is the Edmonton Oilers at -18.

The 1943 New York Rangers hold the record for being winless through 15 games.
