The last non-goalie to win the Conn Smythe Award from the losing Stanley Cup Final team occurred in 1976. However, Oilers standout Connor McDavid is an odds-on favorite, despite Edmonton trailing 3-2 in the series as a +280 underdog.

I’m not saying that ESPN is gonna make a 30 for 30, but the live betting odds market for the Con Smythe Award during game five on Tuesday night was completely fascinating given that Connor McDavid, McJesus, all the nicknames, he was having such an impact. And it’s not out of the question that McDavid could win the Con Smythe on the losing team, especially because it’s playoff MVP, not just Stanley Cup final MVP.
And sure enough, the way the game was playing out, McDavid having another monster game, four points, second time in this series after two goals to assist in game five. So the Oilers stave off elimination again. So they’ve won the last two games, series headed back. And now Connor McDavid is an odds on betting favorite to win the Con Smythe Award, even though Edmonton is plus money, plus two and change to win the series.
And it’s just the way that it has played out now. With the passing of Jerry West, we learned or we’re reminded that West was the only player ever to win the NBA Finals MVP from a losing team. It happened the first year ever that the Finals MVP was awarded. Now it’s happened a handful of times in hockey, but typically it’s a goalie. 2003, get Jiggy with it for the Anaheim Ducks. And then there was Hextall before him for the Flyers. And then before that, a long time ago was a non -goalie from the losing team. So that’s what McDavid would need, but I think it’s a wrap. I think he’s going to get it even if the Panthers win in six. I don’t think it needs to go seven games. And just how poorly Bobrovsky’s played between the pipes. He was the overwhelming favorite after three games. So just how well he’s played. And then Barkov’s been obviously very effective. He’s the second favorite. So the top candidate for the Panthers, but a lot can happen in game six or seven if we go that far. But I think McDavid,
Now I’m not saying he’s worth a bet at minus 150, because that’s where we stand, but I wouldn’t fault anyone if they wanted to fire on it, because I do think he has it wrapped up and he’s gonna play a good game six and maybe even a game seven.
