Alabama, ranked #11 this week by the college football playoff committee, needed a certain sequence of events to enable the Crimson Tide to reach the playoffs. Based on the betting odds, things unfolded unfavorably.

Following all the conference championship game results, the Tide have +240 odds at DraftKings and +230 at FanDuel to receive an at-large bid.

Entering the weekend, a lot of seeding was undetermined, but 10 of the 12 spots appeared known. The final two spots figured to be determined by Alabama and the two ACC title game participants. If #8 SMU, which was a 2.5-point favorite, defeated #17 Clemson, the Crimson Tide were positioned to receive an at-large bid. However, a loss would not necessarily disqualify the Mustangs.

SMU trailed 24-7 at halftime but rallied to tie the game, only to lose on a last-second field goal. The Mustangs now have -330 odds to reach the playoff.
