As The Open tournament at the renowned Royal Liverpool Golf Course entered its second day, fans are already witnessing some exciting performances from talented golfers, including the local hero, Tommy Fleetwood, Matthew Southgate, and Matthew Jordan. Tommy Fleetwood, currently ranked 27th in the FedEx Cup, is proving his strength against the world’s best golfers, holding a strong position in the top ranks.
Fleetwood, despite not yet securing a PGA Tour victory, is showcasing his skills at The Open. Starting the tournament with odds of +1500, he has already surpassed expectations by finishing the first round in second place with a remarkable total score of -5 under. Although Brian Harman holds the lead with a score of -10 under, Fleetwood remains well within striking distance at +400 odds to win the championship. Notably, the opening round at Royal Liverpool Golf Club proved challenging, with fewer than 20 percent of the field shooting under par.
Matthew Southgate, another local player hailing from England, has also begun his journey at The Open with an impressive display. In the past 12 months, Southgate’s participation in two events yielded an average finish of 32nd, with no top-five finishes. However, he has demonstrated a strong start at The Open, currently standing in 11th place with a total score of -1 under. Southgate’s odds have significantly improved from +30,000 to +18,000, giving hope to his fans that he might surprise everyone with a notable finish.
Joining Southgate in 11th place after the second round is the hometown hero, Matthew Jordan. The Wirral Peninsula native has a unique connection to the course, which seems to be working in his favor. Beginning with odds of +35,000, Jordan’s steady performance has now improved his odds to +13,000, making him a dark horse contender for The Open title.
As the tournament progresses, it’s clear that the local players are harnessing their familiarity with the Royal Liverpool Golf Course to their advantage. Fleetwood, in particular, is poised to make a significant impact on the leaderboard, vying for his maiden PGA Tour triumph. Both Southgate and Jordan are showing glimpses of brilliance, and have a chance to create their own success stories. Stay tuned for more updates as the tournament progresses.
