Oddsmakers unfazed by first CFP rankings

Despite this week’s first College Football Playoff rankings unveiling, the national championship futures odds remained unchanged with #2 Ohio State as the +330 title favorite at both DraftKings and FanDuel.

The one-loss Buckeyes are coming off an impressive road win over #6 Penn State. They still have to face #8 Indiana and rival Michigan, although both games are at home.

Top-ranked and undefeated Oregon is actually the third favorite with +450 odds, even though the Ducks already beat the Buckeyes. The Ducks’ final three games are against unranked opponents before a Big Ten championship game appearance.

#2 Georgia, which also has one loss, is the second favorite with odds between +350 and +400. The Bulldogs still have tough sledding left on their schedule, and it starts with #16 Ole Miss on the road this weekend. They also host #7 Tennessee.

#5 Texas is the fourth favorite at +600 before a sizable drop-off in the odds. The Longhorns lost at home to Georgia but can still win the SEC and earn a first-round bye, if other results break their way. Beyond these four teams, there is a steep drop off in national title odds.

The Miami Hurricanes have the next-lowest odds at +1200 on both sites. The Hurricanes are 9-0 and led by Heisman favorite Cameron Ward. Miami is the ACC favorite and on a path for a first-round bye.

The sport’s biggest surprise has been undefeated Indiana. The eighth-ranked Hoosiers are 9-0 for the first time in program history. Nonetheless, they are still title longshots with odds between +3000 and +3500, given they have not yet faced a ranked opponent. However, #3 Ohio State in Columbus looms in a couple weeks.
